24 reboot casts Homeland actress in lead role

Fox is starting to build out the cast for its reboot of 24. On Monday, it cast Corey Hawkins, who played Dr. Dre in Straight Outta Compton, in its Jack Bauer role. And today Deadline reports that Fox has added Miranda Otto, who terrorism-drama enthusiasts might recognize from Homeland. She'll be playing a former leader of CTU, the counter-terrorism unit that Bauer worked at / was intermittently hunted down by throughout the original series.

Deadline describes Otto's role as the series' "female lead," but it doesn't say exactly how extensive that'll be. It could mean the new show will star a duo of agents in the field, or the setup could remain closer to the original series, bouncing between Hawkins' character out in the field and Otto's character back inside CTU. A format tweak might be good after eight seasons of Bauer on the run, Bauer getting called back to CTU, CTU being infiltrated, the conspiracy going way higher than expected, and Bauer resolving everything right before the 24-hour mark. The new 24 is technically just a pilot for now, but you have to imagine that Fox is eager to see it on the air.
